ADC Ikeja 02 Candidate, Salami, Vows To Tackle Rising Rents, Transport Fares
By MainFocus News Correspondent
The ADC candidate for the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Ikeja Constituency 02, Hon. Emmanuel Salami, has promised to pursue legislative measures to address rising rents and transportation challenges if elected in 2027.
Salami made the promise on Wednesday during the ADC Women Lagos Solidarity Walk in Ikeja, convened by Alhaja Bolanle Jafojo to mobilise support for the party’s presidential flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi.
Speaking with MainFocus News at the event, Salami identified rent regulation as one of his top priorities, explaining that he intended to sponsor legislation to check what he described as excessive increases in house rents, particularly in Ikeja.
He noted that the high cost of accommodation around the constituency had forced some workers to live in distant communities like Sango-Ota, despite having their places of employment in Lagos. Our people are suffering. A worker in Ikeja should not be forced to live in Sango-Ota because rent in Ikeja is too high. We must regulate it, Salami said.
Transport: Enforce The Law
On transportation, Salami promised to strengthen the enforcement of existing regulations guiding commercial transport operations and fares, warning that operators who violate the rules could have their vehicles impounded.
He said the problem was not necessarily the absence of regulations but the failure to enforce them, adding that proper monitoring would help address arbitrary fare increases by commercial transport operators. The laws are there, but nobody enforces them. When we get there, we will ensure enforcement. If you charge above the approved fare, your vehicle will be impounded.
Women Are Only Used During Elections
Addressing women’s participation, Salami criticised politicians who mobilise women during election campaigns but abandon them after elections, particularly elderly women. Women are only used during elections and it’s unfortunate. We only use them during elections and after elections, they are dumped, he said.
He added that his approach to lawmaking would involve consulting residents, particularly women, to understand their concerns before proposing legislation, insisting that representation should produce solutions that directly improve people’s lives. I will not sit in the House and make laws without asking the women what they need. Representation must bring solutions.
The walk, which drew hundreds of women from across Lagos, featured placards reading Hardship Must End! Atiku Is Coming! and Lagos Women Say YES to Atiku/Amaechi 2027!
For Salami and other ADC candidates present, the Ikeja walk was more than a rally – it was a promise that ADC representation in 2027 will focus on rent, transport, jobs and women.
