Security Challenges The bane of our existence- By Giwa Similoluwa
One major challenge which is quit universal and rampant not just in third world countries but in various part of the world is; security. It has become such a norm, an everyday part of our lives. We now check and double check doors and cars, put up monitoring cameras in our homes, offices, shops, and even the basic activities are done security consciously.
On the queue to enter a bus, a man looks at you and your reflex response is to hold your bag closer. Who are we to blame for this disoder? Our leaders and government as usual, or these criminaally inclined persons who thrive on exploiting the weak?
More evident among the facets of security is the phisical aspect which is immensely dwelt on, neglecting other facets like the psychological aspect which has to do with the state of security of our emotions, mental capacity and how we feel about ourselves
The mere mention of Nigeria on a global scale will not be complete without the inclusion of Boko Haram; the menace on our national security, which is another broad aspect of security in curbung the challenge of insecurity, some measures should be taken. With the persistent use of these enforcements, there will be gradual improvements which willchange Nigeria for the better.
Perceived security…
It is a sense of creating security even before the presence of a threat. A number of people have begun to use this measure and it has recorded a high rate of effectiveness. This includes the use of cameras, burglar alarms, sturdy building materials and other security equipment. The tendency of a car that has no security at all.
Sensitization
Nigerians need to be sensitized and made aware of their rights, duties and resposibilities. Adequate physical security. Most people lament that even the police and other security forcesmeant to protect the citizens are not parforming accordingly.
Vigilant…
Most people are not vigillant enough towards their property and environment. it is usually easier for an attacker to attack because he is targeting only one weak point while the defender has the more heightened task of keepin watch over all points and area.
Knowledge…
It is often said that, ‘knowledge is power’ without knowledege of basic information that could empower us, we are open to more danger than we can ever imagine. Emergency lines to call in case of robbery, fire or even the locations of police stations in our community would go a long way in helping to attain maximum security.
Invulnerability.
Security is also the degree of resistance to harm. We should endeavour to remove ourselves from vulnerable situations like walking alone on a dark street and unneccessary movement of large sums of physical money. In al, situations that can make us suspectable to attacks should be avaoided.
Non-chalance…
The attitude of non-chalance is deadly when it comes to security matters and should be rid of. It is quite incredible that some people have no clue as to what goes on around them and do not care to help others when they are in dire situations. They prefer rather to be left alone abd out of it. If these little measeures are taken, it certanly will lead to a better environment for all and hopefully create incentives for the government to tacle issues of naional security. little drops of water they say, makes a mighty ocean.
