Nigerians deserve a better living condition by Fisayo Fakayode
Where else can one expect to get the best life can offer? If not in one’s home. It might strike you to know that even in our fathersland, a favorable living condition is just like the definition of faith; ‘The substance of things hoped for’.
The Past governments in power have refused to do what is expected of them. Top government officials embezzle and mismanage fund, and nothing is done about it. The people are wallowing in poverty, yet, nobody cares. Politicians act like they do care when they need votes during elections.
The gap between the rich and the poor is now as large as an ocean. The rich are getting richer while the poor are getting poorer. Factors that determine good living conditions vary from good leadership to a sustainable economy.
How competent is the government in its provision of adequate social amenities like good roads, health centers, stable electricity, and other things that can promote good standard of living in Nigeria?
According to a young Nigerian comedian who pleaded anonymity, the government needs to accept that they are wrong before any change can be made. “Let them be true to themselves first. Let them accept that they are ripping off this nation, only then will they genuinely make this country great”. He said.
One of the biggest challenges we are facing as a country now is insecurity. The Boko Haram sect operations in the last five years and even the kidnapping of the Chibok girls who are still yet to be found, are more than enough to cause one worry. Since 2009 when it became popular, Boko Haram participated actively in the sectarian violence which occurred in Northern Nigeria. After the death of Mohammed Yusuf, the former leader of the group, we thought all was well until Abubakar Shekau took over. since the inception of the sect, many Nigerians have been brutally murdered and innocent people have lost their property and loved ones.
For over a decade, we have been living in fear, oblivious of what tomorrow would bring. Nothing less than 10,000 people have been killed in various activities spearheaded by the group. The government has made efforts to allay the fear of the people, but with more occurrences of this act, and little evident result on the part of the government, maximum fear and uncertainty have clouded the nation.
Apart from security challenges, the high cost of living in Nigeria is another thing to give one concern. Everything has become so expensive because of the inability of our current crop of leaders. This is a nation blessed with oil and good land for agriculture. How do we expect the masses to survive, in this terrible situation?
A parent told MainFocus news that he did what he had never envisioned doing; withdrawing his children from private school to a public one, all because he could not afford to pay the ever increasing fees anymore. The schools also refused to take the blame, maintaining that teachers and other member of staff are also demanding for increment in salary, hence, the fees must be increased too. The teachers also claimed that the cost of living has become so high that only the bourgeoisies of the country won’t be affected.
The bus driver will also attribute his inflated price to the high cost of petrol. Even the students have not escaped from the tight situation of the country. According to a student in the University of Lagos, Olumuyiwa Adenuga, the bad state of the economy has affected him a lot. “My parents have reduced my allowance. As if that is not enough, they do not even send it constantly anymore”. He stated. At the end of the day, everything goes back to the government.
