Governor Bala Mohammed and His “Hide and Seek” Tactics to Shield Damagun from Leaving Office Exposed
It has become increasingly evident that Governor Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, and his ally Governor Wike, are pursuing a destructive agenda aimed at dismantling the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and ultimately pushing Nigeria toward a one-party system. This agenda, it appears, has been endorsed by President Bola Tinubu. As they set out to undermine the very party that once propelled their careers, some of their fellow governors have chosen a different path, one that seems uncertain but is, nonetheless, a rejection of the wrecking ball they are wielding. Governor Bala and his collaborators got a clear indication of this shift during the recent PDP Governors’ Forum meeting in Jos. At the gathering held yesterday in Jos, a number of prominent state governors were conspicuously absent: Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Bayelsa, and Osun states were not represented. Notably, Delta and Enugu states sent their deputies, while only the governors backing Damaging Damagun attended, including those from Oyo, Adamawa, Taraba, and Zamfara states. The absentees offered no excuses. Let me be clear: they did not even bother to provide an explanation for their absence. Damaging Damagun was present, and the attending governors received a stark message: there is serious unrest within the PDP. The governors in attendance have now agreed to resolve the leadership crisis plaguing the party by December. They have also called for the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) to convene a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting by the first week of February. Since entering politics, I have never witnessed such a flagrant display of poor character in elected officials as I have from 2015 to 2023. Greedy, power-hungry, and self-serving individuals have taken the reins, showing little regard for the people they were elected to serve. These leaders demonstrate no empathy for the citizens or the platforms that once elevated them to office. Political parties are usually tight-knit organizations, often discouraging internal conflict. Yet, this group of so-called leaders, with no respect for party structures or the constitution, seems to believe they can act with impunity—without facing any consequences for their actions. Imagine running for election and realizing that you can’t even trust your own supporters, some of whom are actively working against your party. It’s inconceivable. No political party can thrive with such chaos at the top. Credit must go to the governors who boycotted the recent “grandstanding” event in Jos. As governors elected by the people, you have an obligation to be truthful and to stand by your principles. These governors must break free from the deceitful leadership currently steering the PDP, a party that appears to have already sold itself to the sitting president. It’s time to seek a genuine alternative. If they wish, let them draft the obituary of the PDP—its fate no longer rests in the hands of those who truly care for it. After all, no one has an eternal bond with any political party.
