The Impact of Subsidy Removal on the Welfare of Nigerians: An Analysis by Fisayo Fakayode (FISFAK)

Given that Former President Muhammed Buhari paid subsidies for four years, it implies that his administration spent approximately one hundred and ninety-three billion, two hundred million naira (193,200,000,000) every month to subsidize our PMS.

In recent times, Nigeria has witnessed an increase in daily petrol consumption, reaching an average of 56.74 million litres in October 2025, under Tinubu’s administration.

According to the latest Fact Sheet released by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), this information has been disclosed.

The figure, as reported by the regulator, signifies the total nationwide demand documented across fuel distribution channels throughout the month.

Over a one-year period, from October 2024 to October 2025, Nigeria’s average monthly petrol consumption was 661.5 million litres, indicating the country’s sustained high demand for Premium Motor Spirit. This suggests that the Tinubu administration is generating nine hundred twenty five billion, four hundred million naira on a monthly basis from subsidy removal (925,400,000,000).

Subsidy removal on petrol in Nigeria has been the biggest shake-up for businesses since May 2023. Here’s how it’s playing out, especially for businesses: 1. Spike in operating costs, transport and logistics shot up: Fuel prices jumped from ₦185 to ₦500-₦700 per litre immediately after subsidy removal, and by early 2026 some stations were charging ₦1,000-₦1,320 per litre.

For businesses that move goods, deliver services, or rely on staff commuting, transport became 50-200% more expensive overnight. Power costs crushed SMEs: With unstable grid power, many businesses run on diesel generators. Diesel hit ₦1,900 per litre in 2026 and now accounts for up to 51% of operating costs for SMEs.

Food & input prices rose: Petrol price shocks directly feed into food prices and raw materials. If you’re in manufacturing, catering, or retail, your suppliers are also passing on higher transport and energy costs. Poverty rate jumped: A 2026 report says poverty rate jumped to 63% after subsidy removal, meaning a huge chunk of your customer base is now below the poverty line.

If we are to be truthful as citizens, what benefits have been provided to the people by this administration?.
