CLERGY MEN’S SECRETE PARTICIPATION IN POLITICS BY FISAYO FAKAYODE
It is worrisome today that some of our clergymen are involved in what i call ‘secret politics’, instead of playing it open to the awareness of the public. These are men of God whom the people have invested much trust in.
They have chosen to believe in their intelligence as well as their connection with God.
It is a big disappointment however, that in our society today, most of these clergymen are not interested in saying the truth to our erring politicians. They prefer to be biased and unnecessarily diplomatic.
I am not here to judge. Yet, i cannot but say that i am overwhelmed by my thoughts and passion to see a new Nigeria that we all crave for. Nonetheless, the relationship between our clergymen and many of our heartless politicians is what i will like to leave at the feet of God.
For many years now, i have been saying that if Nigerian clergymen are preaching good political conducts just as they preach about tithe and offering, by now Nigeria would have been transformed into an eldorado where kids can go to school without any fear of insurgency and where job opportunities would be available.
Of a truth, my mind cannot grasp how great our nation would have been if the elites had given priority attention to effective governance. Our Clergy men have so many stakes in the political affairs of this nation, because they are meant to be watchdogs. If Nigeria becomes the nation of our dream, it will echo their impacts and influence. Therefore, they should endeavor to preach what will change Nigeria’s political ideology, in order to transform the country from her state of poverty to prosperity. They should also have the understanding that they are the mirrors we look at in order to see the future.
As messengers of God, they should always remember that they are inadvertently the messengers of men. Even the holy book says; “let him that will be great, serve”. No wonder Jesus fed over five thousand people in a single day, when he realised that they were hungry. He knew that when the people are fed, they will be happy, and when they are happy, they will be focused and hear Him out. When they hear Him out, they will do what He had taught them, and when they are doing what he had taughtthem, He Himself will be happy beyond measure, because the happiness of the people, is His and to the glory of God.
Great leaders fight for the happiness of their followers, and our clergymen should not be exempted because the prophets from the ages past were not.
In Nigeria today, it is obvious that some of these religious leaders have mutual relationship with policy makers and the people at the corridors of power. Yet, their relationships have yielded nothing because of their failure to advice them in fairness and truth.
My candid advice to them is that they should contribute to the development of our nation. We want a nation where leaders will not get rich at the expense of their followers, and the masses will be well taken care of. I commend pastor Tunde Bakare, Pastor Yemi Osinbajo and pastor chris Okotie for their involvement in the political affairs of this nation.
The bible says; “righteousness exalt the nation”, therefore, we need men and women with Godly heart to participate in our politics so that we can get to our promised land without so much fuss. The journey of the Israelites from Babylon back to their land was spear headed by the prophet Daniel whose political instincts was of great help to him. It is the duty of our clergymen to be part of political development that will enhance the dividends of democracy, irrespective of public opinion against them.
There are so many ancient prophets that were involved in the development of their nation. Our very own clergymen should not be exempted; in as much as they are participating in the role of making Nigeria a true giant, not only in Africa, but also in other industrialized nations of the world.
Martin Luther Kings Jnr is the best person to use for my illustration. Apart from his pastoral works he felt the need of his people, their aspiration to live with happiness without prejudice and restriction on their freedom. he suffered for his people, he made their happiness his aspiration, although this led him to prison occasionally. His belief and the hope for a better future for his people was what eventually led to his death.
This is exactly what we are demanding from our clergymen. The fight for a new Nigeria, the fight to end corruption, the fight to end unemployment, the fight to end poverty, the fight to end insurgency, and the fight to transform the nation in all ramifications.
It is time for them to separate themselves from politics that do not improve the lives of Nigerians.
This is the time for us to take charge, the time to assume responsibility, the time to fight for our rights, the time to take what belongs to us, because we can’t afford to be deceived any longer.
I laud Nigerians for being industrious, but they have not discovered the origin of their problems and how they can be solved; this is the reason why Nigerians are still struggling everyday for survival.
When i was interviewed by cable news network (CNN) in year 2010 about information technology market strategies in Africa, i made it known that information technology (IT) business would be very lucrative in Nigeria. After the interview, many Chinese and some business men around the globe trooped into Nigeria and started establishing phones and computer business that provide foods for jobless million Nigerians as of today . I implore Nigerian youths to always be agents of good change.
There is a saying in Yoruba that says “it is only once that one can deceitfully take another to a bamboo house that is covered with leaves”. From all indications, this is the time to work together as one nation to take our country to a greater heights. According to Fela Anikulapo Kuti, “we can’t afford to be suffering and smiling”.
