Nigeria may face a nationwide industrial action as the deadline given by organised labour expires today, Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress had given the Federal Government until today to address workers’ demands after a meeting at the Ministry of Labour ended in deadlock.
Labour leaders said government officials at the last meeting had no real authority to negotiate, and no concrete commitment was reached.
Following the stalemate, the Federal Government has called an emergency meeting with labour leaders today to prevent a shutdown of the country.
The meeting is expected to discuss petrol price reduction to 2024 levels, implementation of new minimum wage, tax relief measures, and outstanding allowances for public workers.
NLC warned that failure to make meaningful progress could lead to nationwide action that may affect public services, transport and businesses across the country.
One of labour’s key demands is reduction in petrol price. Since subsidy removal in May 2023, fuel cost has pushed up transportation and cost of living for workers and households.
Labour is also demanding better implementation of minimum wage, peculiar allowances for health workers under JOHESU, hazard allowances and wage awards.
The government has defended its reforms as necessary for long-term growth but is now under pressure to show tangible improvements for workers to avert strike.
As of press time, no strike has been formally declared. The outcome of today’s emergency talks will determine whether Nigeria will be hit by industrial action.
